Reading In Class

Form Three A2 students engrossing in their work. It is crucial to understand and comprehend the skills needed to excel in their writing. I always emphasize on the needs to read for information and knowledge so that students will be able to respond appropriately when they come across a situation.

This is how the class looks like when it comes to a reading session. When students read, ensure that teachers provide them the tasks so that they know what to accomplish.
I will revert with more feedback later on. Thank you.

READ A STORY

The Frog in the Well

There was a frog that lived in a shallow well.

" Look how well off I am here ! " he told a big turtle from the Eastern Ocean. " I can hop along the coping of the well when I go out, and rest by a crevice in the bricks on my return. I can wallow to my heart's content with only my head above water, or stroll ankle deep through soft mud. No crabs or tadpoles can compare with me. I am master of the water and lord of this shallow well, What more can a fellow ask ?

Why don't you come here more often to have a good time ? "

Before the turtle from the Eastern Ocean could get his left foot into the well, however, he caught his right claw on something. So he halted and stepped back then began to describe the ocean to the frog.

" It's more than a thousand miles across and more than ten thousand feet deep. In ancient times there were floods nine years out of ten yet the water in the ocean never increased.

And later there were droughts seven years out of eight yet the water in the ocean never grew less. It has remained quite constant through out the ages. That is why I like to live in the Eastern Ocean. "

Then the frog in the shallow well was silent and felt a little abashed.

Today a school without games and sports is unthinkable, as sports and games have become an integral element of present-day education. Formerly teaching consisted of merely imparting the basic skills of 3R’s (Reading, Writing and Arithmetic).

But true learning is much more than that. Today education is an all-round development of the child. In this respect games and sports play a significant role. It is in this backdrop that most schools organise their Annual Sports Day.

Last year, my school’s Annual Sports Day was held on 20th Oct. Generally a month of preparation precedes the day. A month prior to the event, all the children of the school were divided into four houses and respective sports groups such as senior, junior and sub-junior. Once the children are allotted their houses and groups, the various Outdoor Games begin. It is the most interesting and the most spirited part of the whole event.

Immediate preparation for the day commenced two days prior to the event. Different works such as, the preparation of the welcome gate, pandel, flag post, tracks, Olympic torch, decoration of the area, arrangement of the prizes, etc., were allotted to the different houses for completion. On 19th Oct, the final touches were given to the preparation and last rehearsals were held for the inaugural function and the cultural show.

The Sports Day commenced at 7.50 a.m. the following day with the welcoming of the chief guest. Our chief guest for the occasion was the newly appointed District Deputy Commissioner. He was solemnly welcomed at the gate by a group of Wangala dancers (Garo dancers) and by the school authorities. He was garlanded at the gate and given a bouquet of flowers as a token of official welcome.

Thereafter, he was led to the specially erected pandal by
the Wangala dancers.

As soon as he reached the Pandal, he hoisted the School’s Sports flag amidst the singing of the school anthem by the children, which was followed by an impressive march past, lighting of the Olympic flame and the oath-taking ceremony.

The chief guest then addressed the students wherein he outlined briefly the value of sports and games in student’s life and possibilities of career options in this field. The inaugural function came to a close with the display of a short drill. Sports events commenced soon after this.

The races, throws, jumps and the various items followed one by one. At 3.00 p.m the sports events in the field came to a close with the last item of musical chair for the staff. The concluding programme commenced immediately after this.

The chief event of the concluding function was the group dances performed by the different houses and the prize distribution by the chief guest. The last item of the eventful day was the de-hoisting of the sports flag by the chief guest, signalling the official closing of the school’s Annual Sports Day for the year.

Annual Sports Day is an eagerly awaited event in my school. It is a time of great fun and joy in the school as the days prior to the event as well as the day itself are marked by tournaments, matches and various competitions.

Apart from teaching us good values such as, sportsmanship, proper spirit of competition, team-spirit, co-operation, discipline in the field, etc. Annual Sports Day makes school life lively, interesting, enjoyable and memorable.

Note from Mr Khiew

Dear boys, look at the sample of essay below.

There is a great importance of games and sports for the students. The sports teach discipline to the students. These sports are very essential for the students. They also develop the spirit of the sportsmanship and suddenly derive a lot of pleasure by playing games. It also inculcates the quality of team spirit in them. The students learn the qualities of leadership and working unitedly. Generally games are played in every school.

In our school we have a very big playground where the students play games regularly. We also celebrate our Annual Sports Day every year in the month of January. Preparations for the celebration of the sports day are made much in advance. There is a big gathering on that day in our school. The students who excel in games are given prizes by the chief guest.

The parents of the students are also invited to attend the sports. This year our annual sports day was celebrated on the 10th of January. The Director of Educaion had kindly agreed to preside over the function. The sports day started at 9:00 a.m. with a memorable and colorful ceremony. First of all the chief guest unfurled the flag. After this there was a march past by the students in their beautiful smart dresses. After the march past the chief guest declared open the sports meet.

First of all the 100 meter race war organized. The signal for starting it was given by a pistol shot. One teacher was noting the time with the help of a stop watch. A photographer was also present. He took the photograph of the boys who stood first. There were many other races like 220 meter race. Half mile race and one mile race.

The hurdle race was very interesting. After the races were over high jump long jump and pole jump were organized. My friend Imran stood first in the long jump. I stood first in the high jump. Then came the turn of discus throw javelin throw. After this there was the tug of war which was a highly exciting event. The spectators continuously cheered the participants. Then there was a Kabaddi match between the two teams of our school. It was also quite interesting in fact the sports day was a very wonderful day.

We all enjoyed immensely the various events. At the end the prize distribution function was held. Before the prizes were distributed a cultural program was organized. Some students sand patriotic songs while other recited poems. After this the prize distribution function was held. The chief guest gave away the prizes to the winners. He also congratulated the prize winners and gave a brief speech. Then our principal gave a small speech to thank the chief guest for attending our sports day. After this there was a small tea party and refreshments were distributed to all the students and the guests. Thus ended the sports day of our school.
